Lahaul & Spiti Valley

Lahaul & Spiti Valley is a cold mountain valley in the Himalayas situated in the northern part of Himachal Pradesh. The name “Spiti” means “Middle land”, denoting the land between Tibet and India. This magnificent cold desert valley in Himachal Pradesh is dotted with pine forests, lush green pastures, magnificent monasteries, and fortified villages. Located at an altitude of 12,500 feet above sea level the empty mountains here change color every second and it is a sight to behold. Summer

During the months of March & April, the weather is comparatively cold and one can expect landscapes full of snow. Though, the weather remains usually warm and pleasant during May and June and is considered an ideal time for a road trip. All the high passes also get opened.

Monsoon

Since it’s a cold desert, rain doesn’t happen much. July, August, and September are also considered ideal months to do a road trip in the region. The weather remains warm & pleasant.

Winter

The temperature dips around -20 degrees making it one of the coldest places in India. The high passes and roads get blocked most of the time due to snow. Though, the views are very impressive as the place becomes a snow wonderland.

How to Reach Lahaul & Spiti Valley

By Train

The nearest railway station is Shimla that one can reach by taking the Kalka-Shimla mountain train.

By Air

Kullu or Bhuntar Airport at Kullu is the nearest airport. One can board a taxi from the airport to reach the destination.

By Road

Lahaul can be reached by taking the Manali Leh highway that passes through Rohtang Pass or Atal Tunnel. It takes around 4-5 hours to reach Keylong, Headquarters of Lahaul Valley. Spiti Valley can be reached either from Shimla side via Rampur and Kinnaur or Manali side via Kunzum Pass.
